In 1989, the University of West Alabama (then Livingston University) became the first public institution in Alabama approved to offer a bachelor of science in athletic training. Now, UWA has also become the first approved by its state and national accrediting bodies to offer a master鈥檚 degree in athletic training. Students who want to enter the field can even earn a bachelor鈥檚 and master鈥檚 degree in a single program in only five years.

Two University of West Alabama engineering technology students recently participated in a 10-week paid internship at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee, the largest U.S. Department of Energy science and energy laboratory. While there, the students worked the laboratory鈥檚 specialized areas of scientific discovery, clean energy solutions and security technologies.

Students in the University of West Alabama鈥檚 welding certificate program recently received a boost of confidence when officials from a national shipbuilding operation visited campus to assess their skills. When tested, 75 percent of the students passed the test and were offered a job with Huntington Ingalls Industries.
